How Fast Do I Need to Be to Swim D1?

Division I Swimming Recruiting Times

A Simple Question with a Complicated Answer

How fast do I need to be to swim D1? Seems like a simple question but the answer is a bit complicated. This guide will break down some of the variables to give you a better understanding of the college swimming landscape. The conference time ranges below have been updated using 2025-26 conference championship prelim results, with 8th place used as the A-final benchmark and 16th place used as the B-final benchmark. Let’s start off with some of the basics:
  • There is a huge variation in speed across D1. The top-end is a lot faster than the middle which is a lot faster than the bottom of D1. There are Olympic medal winners in D1. There are also D1 swimmers who never swam a Futures cut.
  • It is more about the conference you swim in than it is about the Division. You need to be able to contribute at the conference level, and every conference is its own world.
  • Do not overlook the speed of top-end D2, D3, NAIA, and NJCAA. There are multiple D2 and D3 conferences that are faster than several D1 conferences. Some D2 and D3 schools would be in the top-half of D1. There are D2 and D3 team relays that are faster than several Power4 teams.
  • Just because you think you have the times to swim at a college does not mean that coach will recruit you. Times are important but there are several other factors in play.

Contributing to Conference Championships with B-Final Times

Having one to three events that would make a B-final at last year’s conference championships means you can contribute to a team’s point total at championships. While some coaches are looking for one, two, or three B-final times from potential recruits, others may only be looking for A-final times or even NCAA scoring times. Some Power4 coaches may be looking for C-final times. Every conference has different times, and every coach’s recruiting criteria is unique. Below are the D1 conference B-final time ranges for reference.

Where Can I Find Times for a Specific Conference?

SwimIntel members can quickly view conference championship A-final and B-final cut times in one of several places – conference profile pages, college profile pages (example), and directly inside your student-athlete profile by clicking the “Best Times” button. Outside of SwimIntel, search for the PDF results for a specific conference championships meet which can often be found on the conference or college team website.

How Do I Know if I am Fast Enough to Swim at a Specific College?

The best way to understand how a college team will recruit in the future is to analyze how they recruited in the past. That historical recruiting analysis can be broken down by looking at the average Impact Rating (more info) of the current team when they were in high school. If you are a member of SwimIntel, you can see that average on each college’s profile page (example). Comparing your Impact Rating to the historical average of a team’s recruit will help you understand if you are faster or slower than the average recruit and by how much.

What is the Best Way to Showcase My Potential to College Coaches?

College coaches can use one of several databases, including USA Swimming’s SWIMS database, to see your best times. But you are more than just your times. You want them to see your entire student-athlete resume both in and out of the pool (athletics, academics, leadership, …). Find and claim your SwimIntel profile (free!) then customize it to show college coaches and NIL brand sponsors your true personality (step-by-step guide). Highlight time drops. Tell coaches what makes you unique. Showcase awards. College coaches are researching you. Tell your story so they can see your true potential.
